Chittenden County
Chittenden County is the largest of Vermont’s 14 counties. It is situated on the eastern shore of Lake Champlain. Its neighboring counties are Grand Isle County to the north, Franklin County to the northeast, Lamoille County to the east, Washington County to the southeast, and Addison County to the south. The western neighbors, in New York State across Lake Champlain, are Essex and Clinton counties.
The county seat of Chittenden County is the city of Burlington, Vermont’s largest city with a population of just under 40,000, according to U.S. Census data for 2000. Chittenden County, of which the total population is just over 146,000 according to 2000 US Census figures, includes 18 other cities, towns, villages, and unincorporated communities, most of them a reasonable commute to Burlington. Principal among these are Colchester, Essex Junction, Shelburne, South Burlington, Williston, and Winooski, and most of the other communities are located within 20 miles of Burlington. Lang Associates’ head office is located in South Burlington, a community next to Burlington with a population of just over 15,000.
Of the County’s 56,452 households in 2000, more than 32% housed children under the age of 18. The median household income in the county was $47,673, and the median family income topped $59,000. The median male income was $38,541, the average for females $27,853. Per capita income throughout the county was $23,501.
Chittenden County hosts a number of industries, among them an IBM microchip factory in Essex Junction and a GE Healthcare headquarters in South Burlington. Burlington is the home campus of the University of Vermont, and Chittenden County also hosts Champlain College, St. Michael’s College, Burlington College, and local campuses of both the Community College of Vermont and Vermont Technical College. Most Chittenden County communities offer excellent elementary school and recreational facilities and activities, and there are 12 public and private high schools.
