Addison County

Addison County, the third Vermont county that Lang Associates serves, also boasts the east shore of Lake Champlain as its western boundary. Chittenden County is to the north, Washington County to the northeast, Orange County to the east, Windsor County to the southeast, and Rutland County to the south. The New York counties directly across Lake Champlain are Washington and Essex.

Addison County’s seat is the town of Middlebury, an active community that boasts as one of its attractions the widely renowned Middlebury College. US Census figures for the year 2000 indicate the County has a population of just under 36,000. Of its 13,068 households, 34.40% host children under the age of 18. The average household size is 2.55 persons and the median family size 3.02 persons. Median income per household is $43,142, and the median family income $49,351. The median male income is $31,836 versus $24,416 for females. Per capita income county-wide is $19,539.

In addition to Middlebury (population just over 8,100), Addison County’s principal centers are Bristol (population just over 3,700) and Vergennes (population just over 2,700). Vergennes for many years was known as the United States’ smallest city.

A major dairy farming center in the state of Vermont, Addison County also is home to a number of light industries. Most of the county’s 23 towns and villages boast active school and recreation programs and convenient retail shopping. The county’s three high schools are Mount Abraham Union High School in Bristol, Middlebury Union High School in Middlebury, and Vergennes High School in Vergennes. In addition to Middlebury College, that town also hosts one of the 12 statewide campuses of the Community College of Vermont.
